Details For Our Trip To Greece

Dates: May 22 - June 5, 2017

We're planning a two week tour of the Greek mainland and the islands of Santorini and Crete. This isn't a package tour with a large, impersonal tour company! It will be personally designed and led by one of our instructors, Dr. Dale Grote, who has taken more than 20 groups (academic as well as private) to Greece over the past 15 years. Our tour will be small and personal with a maximum size of 20. We have ten spots reserved for Harvey Center students and family. The other ten will filled by students from Wes Callihan's Schola Tutorials. (Dale and Wes have done 5 joint tours in the past.)

About the Tour Leader

Dr. Grote (Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison) is a professor at The University of North Carolina in Charlotte. He has been teaching Greek and Latin for over 20 years and is also the author of The Comprehensive Guide to Wheelock's Latin. Dr. Grote has recently written a new Latin textbook on the Gospel of Mark, of the Vulgate, which was just published by Bolchazy-Carducci. He is a tutor at the Harvey Center and has been teaching homeschoolers for many years. He also speaks Modern Greek.

  • A typical days starts with a short preview of the sites and museums to be visited that day.

  • Dr. Grote conducts the site and museum tours personally

  • The tour comes with a study guide that participants can print out and bring with them to keep track of their notes, if they wish.

  • While there's no college academic credit offered, there is a series of short exams and writing opportunities, as well as a mock final exam to help them bring it altogether at the end

  • $2400 ($500 deposit is due December 1, 2016)

  • Includes:

    • All accommodations in Greece in double rooms (a single room is available for a supplemental fee of about $650)

    • All breakfasts

    • All lunches

    • Half the dinners

    • All transportation in Greece

    • All site and museum fees

  • Does not include:

    • Half the dinners

    • International travel to and from Athens

  • A schedule of deposits and payments will be announced as the planning process develops.

Note recent change--> Dates: May 22 - June 5, 2017

You will need to make your own plans to arrive in Athens airport on May 22nd, where Dale will pick you up.  N.b.--So this means that you will probably need to leave the US on May 21, since the flights are usually overnight. There aren't any plans for joint travel to Athens, but in the past many groups have found it desirable to come over on the same flight. Dale has a travel agent who can coordinate this is you wish to go this way.  At the tour's end, you will leave from the Athens airport on June 5th.

Please feel free to contact Dale Grote personally for questions about the tour, fees, or travel tips, at
